Republic Services: Making a Positive Impact in Michigan Communities

At Republic Services, our mission goes beyond providing safe and effective waste management solutions to companies and manufacturers across the country. We are deeply committed to the communities we serve, striving to enhance the lives of local residents through meaningful actions and partnerships. Over the past year, we have taken significant steps to support and uplift various community groups and initiatives. Here’s a summary of our community-related actions in Michigan.

Supporting Local Kitchens

Republic is proud to have provided $25,000 grants to the Georgia Street Community Collective and Jonsin’ for a Change to enhance their community kitchens. The Georgia Street Community Collective, founded by Mark Covington, initially worked to transform empty lots into thriving gardens. Now, the organization is focused on maintaining the community center and gardens, along with offering educational and mentoring programs to residents. Jonsin’ for a Change focuses on building stronger communities through skilled activities, personal training, development and education. These grants will help both organizations continue their incredible work in revitalizing neighborhoods and supporting local families.

Collaboration with Urban Development Corporation

In partnership with the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), Republic assisted in clearing eight barrels from a site designated for a future community facility. UDC is dedicated to improving the quality of life for low to moderate-income families in Detroit’s inner-city neighborhoods. Our collaboration will help pave the way for the development of a new community space, providing much-needed resources and support for the surrounding community.

Impacting Detroit-Area Youth

We partnered with the Midnight Golf Program to provide essential golf equipment, including clothing and clubs, to nearly 300 Detroit area students and 60 mentors participating in the Road Trip for Success (RTFS) college tour from March 24-30, 2024. The Midnight Golf Program leverages golf as the vehicle to teach life skills and the discipline necessary for young people to succeed in college, their professional careers, and beyond through professional development, mentoring, and college readiness workshops.

Environmental Stewardship

As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, Republic, cleaned a stormwater runoff area to eliminate flooding activity. This effort not only helped protect the local environment but also safeguarded the community from potential water damage and health hazards. This past year, we donated a new lawnmower to a local community center to support our neighborhoods and maintain the beauty and safety of our area.

Romulus Clean Sweep

In April, we participated in the Romulus Clean Sweep, an effort focused on beautifying the city. Ahead of the NFL draft, the mayor aimed to clean up the gateway into the community. Our team, alongside other volunteers, worked diligently to enhance the appearance of Romulus, reflecting our commitment to creating clean and welcoming environments for all residents.

Romulus Pocket Park

Republic Services proudly contributed $30,000 to the city of Romulus for the development of a downtown alley park project. This “Pocket Park” will act as a bridge between community members and provide a welcoming space for citizens of all ages. The project is focused on transforming a formerly demolished building site, located between two current buildings, into a vibrant green area.

Bailey Park Project

Republic Services was happy to invest $30,000 to the Bailey Park Project, with $15,000 dedicated to sponsoring the community fair event and another $15,000 allocated for constructing a new pavilion. This pavilion will serve as a central hub for large-scale community gatherings and events, promoting engagement and providing a venue for various activities that bring residents together.
